“Heads will roll”—why head injuries matter in car accidents
If you’re in a car accident, there are obviously an unending number of bad possibilities that could occur. Head injury is one of the most serious of these to consider. Why? For one, it can happen more easily than you might believe.
When a vehicle suddenly comes to a halt or quickly changes direction, your head is in serious risk. It can hit hard objects like the steering wheel, side window, or windshield (if you wear a seatbelt, you are much less likely to hit this front window). Some of the minor possibilities if this impact are bruising or scraping. If you’re less lucky, you might have deep cuts that damage the skin tissue.
The more serious injuries involve what’s called a closed head injury. In this case, the tissue and substances within the skull are harmed because of the head collision. A concussion, for example, is a closed head injury. One of the most serious possibilities in an accident, brain damage, can also occur when a head injury is involved.
