Spring is upon us! Many people’s thoughts are remarkably similar around this time of year—Losing weight. But before you nose dive into any random exercise regime, stop and think about it! Not all physical activities are equal.
Most people fall into this trap. They automatically decide that every gym trip will include the following: Walking on a treadmill, jogging on a treadmill and/or running on a treadmill. Not only is this boring, it’s also not as effective as you think.
A recent study showed that another form of exercise (in the same amount of time) reduced belly fat twice as much as aerobic-only exercise. It’s called resistance training. AKA weight lifting and weight training.
People who lifted weights lost twice as much belly fat as people who did aerobics (e.g. treadmill, Stairmaster, elliptical, etc.). Weight training is tremendous for toning muscle and burning fat. If your goal is to lose weight, especially in the stomach area, resistance training can be your biggest friend.
Weight lifting also fights the processes of aging. It strengthens your bones and reverses muscle wasting.
I don’t mean to say that you should stop doing aerobic exercise. In fact, you should be doing aerobics, at least some of the time. However, don’t fall into the trap of making it your sole workout routine. Instead, focus on resistance training and then incorporate aerobics during the other parts of the week.
