Look Like 30s in Your 50s: Go for Hormone Replacement Therapy

Who doesn’t want to look like JLO and Marissa Tomei in their fifties? Also, did you know Madonna is 63!? Aging gracefully can, not be just genes, there’s more to it.

Thankfully the cosmetic industry today has some excellent anti-aging treatments available. Hormone Replacement Therapy (or HRT) is one of them. Before we begin to probe deeper into how hormone therapy helps your skin look younger, we will understand the science behind the process of aging.

Why Does the Skin Age?

Aging is a natural process but not many of us wonder what it is that makes the skin age with time. The skin comprises three layers-epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

Epidermis

The epidermis is the topmost layer of the skin. It is made up of skin cells, keratin, and other proteins. The primary function of the epidermis is to protect the body against pathogens and weather. This layer is also responsible for the production of new skin cells. It is the epidermis that contains melanin imparting color to our skin.

Dermis

The dermis is the middle layer. The dermis constitutes 90% of the thickness. It stores collagen and elastin making the skin strong and bouncy. Nerve receptors in the dermis help you identify pain and temperature. This layer produces sebum and also grows hair.

Hypodermis

The lowermost layer of the skin, the hypodermis is a fatty layer. It cushions your bones and muscles from injuries. The hypodermis is essentially a connecting tissue between the skin and the muscles/bones. The fat in this layer regulates your body’s temperature when exposed to heat or cold.

When the skin ages, the epidermis becomes thinner (the number of cells remains the same). The melanocytes (cells containing pigment) decrease in number but increase in size. As a result, your skin appears dull and pale.

Not using proper SPF can cause age spots. The blood vessel in the dermis become more sensitive and even a minor injury can give rise to conditions like senile purpura and cherry angiomas. After menopause, a woman’s sebaceous glands gradually start producing lesser amounts of oil which result in itchy, dry-looking skin.

However, the most prominent change that occurs is in the hypodermis. The subcutaneous fat shifts giving your face a sunken appearance. Collagen and estrogen production hits a low and the skin wrinkles and sags. The face muscles themselves weaken with time, unable to hold up against the gravity. This is why old people have drooping jowls and downturned eyes.

How Can Hormone Therapy Make You Look Younger?

Hormone therapy reintroduces estrogen and progesterone in women nearing their perimenopause and menopause to combat the body’s waning natural production. Estrogen subdues wrinkles and fine lines. It also helps cases of female pattern balding. Estrogen is directly linked to the production of hyaluronic acid in the body. Hyaluronic acid in turn is responsible for tightening the skin. It also eases hydration. Women with a greater amount of hyaluronic acid are more likely to have healthy, hydrated skin.

Hormone specialists note that HRT also has other benefits like boosting your libido and energy levels.
